Bio

Dr. Nicholas Johnson is a musicologist, writer, and opera librettist. A Fulbright and Mellon scholar, his research centers on intersections between music and the history of science, critical philosophy, and American popular culture. His creative writing explores elements of music history in fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. As a public-facing musicologist, Dr. Johnson hosts the music and culture podcast "Classical Pairings," and his first board game, Impresario, invites players with no prior knowledge of music to compete in the ruthless world of classical music.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Musicology at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana and the Director of Graduate Studies of the School of Music. He is also enrolled in the MFA program in Creative Writing at Butler.
